CASE STUDIES

Trattoria Verde, Southend-on-Sea

Surinder Paul has owned the Trattoria Verde in Southend for over 10 years – a world away from his original career as an IT architect for a high street bank. Years of working in Turin and Milan gave him an appetite for proper Italian food – so it was only natural he would eventually set up a restaurant in his home town of Southend-on-Sea.

The hospitality and restaurant business has seen some enormous changes and challenges since 2019, not least with enforced tiers and national lockdowns. However, Surinder has seen this as an opportunity to capitalise on the requirements his establishment needs to cater not only for his customers, but for the “new normal” that has become ingrained into our daily lives.

Trattoria Verde, Southend-on-Sea

“I have a very loyal clientele base, and saw a requirement to make them feel safe when they dine with us. We’ve installed new screens and partitions, and landscaped a beautiful outdoor area – meaning that social distancing will be observed and won’t be too intrusive when we are able to open again – and more importantly, our customers will feel secure.

“It was also the perfect opportunity whilst we were doing the work, to install some updated equipment. The addition of a blast chiller, a walk-in freezer and a new pizza fridge has considerably increased our storage capabilities.”

Mr Paul sourced his equipment from Adexa Direct Limited and secured the finance from Kennet Equipment Leasing, part of the STAR Asset Finance Group.

“I have been working with Kennet for over 17 years now, and wouldn’t go anywhere else. My contact, Lucy Lamb, has always looked out for us, making sure we have the best finance deals and turning any request for finance round quickly. I’d certainly never entertain going anywhere else.”

Lucy Lamb of Kennet added “We absolutely love working with Trattoria Verde, and have seen Surinders’ business go from strength to strength. It’s these partnerships with our customers that gives us great pride in what we do as a finance company.”

The Forge & Fern, Bristol

An old Victorian pub in Bristol has been transformed into a cutting-edge, eco-friendly Café-Bar & Restaurant with a gin distillery, with help from Ignition Credit, part of the STAR Asset Finance Group.

The Forge & Fern in Broad Street, Staple Hill, recently opened to the public in July 2022 following a stunning renovation project that has included the construction of an external living wall with its own eco-system, a gin distillery in the basement visible to diners via a glass floor, the creation of a home-grown herb and botanicals garden, and the installation of roof-top bee-hives for harvesting honey for the restaurant.

The extensive renovation project was supported with a £180,000 finance package provided by Ignition to cover some of the refurbishment and fit-out costs.

Nicola Hambly and Matt Slade at The Forge & Fern

According to Matt Slade, Group Managing Director of The Forges Group, since opening to the public on 22nd July, The Forge & Fern has proved hugely popular, with customers rating the quality food, specialist coffee and curated drinks menu, as well as enjoying the alfresco terrace and family friendly garden. He comments:

“Staple Hill is an area of Bristol that’s prime for regeneration, with lots of demand but limited options for gastro-pub dining. The Forge & Fern is meeting that need, through the provision of great food and hospitality in an amazing environment. And since we are bike friendly and so close to the cycle route, we’re attracting lots of visitors to the area too.”

Matt Slade continues: “A project like this involves a considerable amount of investment upfront, which is where asset finance can make all the difference. The team at Ignition have been helpful and swift in providing the funding we needed to bring The Forge & Fern vision to life.”

Nicola Hambly, Associate Director at Ignition Credit comments:

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Matt and his team and to see their hard work come to fruition. The Forge & Fern is now a stunning venue, offering an amazing dining experience – what a transformation!”
